How To Build a Custom House

Updated: Jul 3, 2019

Building a home can be OVERWHELMING to say the least. Especially for the first time home builders. Many people do not realize how many decisions need to be made!

Here are the top 5 ways to survive a home build...

1.) Choosing Your Builder

I can not stress how important it is to pick a good contractor! The person you select will determine how your entire building process will go.

Choose a contract that a friend or family member has personally recommended. As your friends/family they are more likely to give you their honest opinion and share their experience with you.

Picking the right contractor that fits you will determine how your project stays on schedule and how mistakes are handled.

2.) Ask Questions

Most people feel that they are being annoying by asking too many questions. But you have to remember your builder does this on a daily basis. You however, do not! Ask those questions you have to avoid big mistakes in the end.

3.) Do Your Research

The biggest mistake people make is not doing any research. Walking into selection meetings and not having a plan. Don't get me wrong, you don't have to have all the answers but having a general direction is a win win for everyone!

I tell ALL my clients to go through their local Parade of Homes. Compare the sizes of rooms to the rooms on your plan. Take notes of the flooring, is it hardwood or vinyl? If you see something you like, don't be afraid to ask what it is!

Now I'm not suggesting you go and copy a house piece for piece. But getting to walk through other homes can open your mind to all the components that go into the home building process.

4.) Finish Line

There is a light at the end of the tunnel, I promise! Somedays it might not seem like it, but there is I swear.

All the decisions and hiccups that come along with building a new house is worth it in the end. Try to focus on why you wanted to build in the first place.

Do not focus on the little details, keep your eye on the big picture! Check in with your builder and stay in the loop. This will help the process go a little more smoother!

5.) Hire an Interior Designer

Oh come on, we all knew I was going to suggest this!

On a serious note, this is a game changer. Hiring someone who does this for a living will help the entire selection process become a breeze. So many people tell me the one thing they didn't enjoy about building a house is all the decisions! So hire someone to help you!

Building a house is by far one of the biggest investment people make in their entire life. Don't you want to do it the right way? A lot of people think only "wealthy" people hire designers. This is simply NOT true! I highly suggest you reach out to a designer and get their pricing, you could be pleasantly surprised!!
